Minimalist, Natural, Functional – Mastering Scandinavian Style in Commercial Spaces
Scandinavian design, known for its simplicity, functionality, and connection to nature, has become increasingly popular in office spaces over recent years. The calm, understated aesthetic not only looks sleek and modern but also promotes productivity, creativity, and well-being among employees.
With its soothing, natural warmth, Scandinavian design cultivates the optimal environment for today's workforce. Clarity of thought, renewed inspiration, and a sense of calmness set the stage for employees to reach their highest potential.
The Scandi Story

Inspired by the landscapes and values of Nordic countries such as Sweden, Denmark, and Finland, the Scandinavian (or ‘Scandi’) style is characterised by minimalism, organic materials, and natural light. Clutter is eliminated in favour of clean lines, neutral colours, and high-quality, sustainable materials like light wood, stone, and natural fibres.
With Scandi design, the emphasis is on craftsmanship and durability over design trends.
More than minimalism
Unlike some stark, cold interpretations of minimalism, Scandinavian design also incorporates warmth through textures, plants, and cosy furnishings. The goal with Scandi design is to create an inviting workspace where employees can focus with ease.
The building blocks of Scandinavian design
Though streamlined and simplistic at first glance, each element of a true Scandi interior works in harmony to create a soothing yet inspiring workspace.
Achieving this look is a three-step process:
1. Cleanness
Free of clutter and ornamentation, these spaces feature clean lines, neutral colours, and visual simplicity. Light wood tones and whites feature heavily in Scandinavian colour palettes, creating a bright yet neutral backdrop. Any pops of vibrant colour should be woven in discreetly, usually through plants or clean-lined paintwork.
This is what makes Scandinavian design so effective in workplaces. It is inherently distraction-free whilst still being enriching.
2. Purity
Natural materials also define the Scandinavian aesthetic. Light-hued wood is used extensively for floors, furniture, wall panelling, and accents. Stone surfaces can also be used to add textural interest while maintaining a monochromatic colour scheme.
Linen, jute, wool, and other natural fibres are also popular choices for bringing warmth to upholstered furniture and rugs.
Each material used in a Scandi fitting is thoughtfully crafted and allowed to shine in all its organic glory.
3. Connectivity
Biophilic elements like lush potted plants, breezy linen drapes, and moss walls soften industrial edges and breathe life into workspace design.
In Scandinavian design, sunlight is maximised through ample windows, glass partitions, and skylights. And this natural light reflects off the characteristic white walls and surfaces, keeping things bright and airy.
The benefits of Scandinavian design in your workspace
This stylish and timeless aesthetic offers many advantages for modern office environments, including:
- Increased Focus & Productivity: Devoid of disruptive visual and physical clutter, Scandinavian spaces allow workers to concentrate. The minimal decor prevents overstimulation, with a tranquil atmosphere that instead leads to more focused, attentive, and productive employees.
- Reduced Stress: Exposure to natural light and greenery inherently lowers stress, and neutral colours are soothing to the eyes and mind. Scandinavian design promotes organisation and visually simplifies space, further decreasing anxiety.
- More Collaborative Spaces: The light, spacious feel of Scandinavian design accommodates open, flexible working areas. Movable furniture on wheels and modular components allow reconfiguration for group projects or meetings, and clean sight lines aid communication and accessibility.
- Flexibility and Adaptability: In lieu of heavy built-ins, Scandinavian elements like wood screens can partition space in an agile way. Adjustable furniture also allows offices to transform as needs change, supporting evolving workflows.
The Scandinavian look brings beauty, tranquillity, and functionality together in exquisite balance.

Autotrader Manchester Project
We recently implemented some signature Scandinavian elements into the Manchester office of Autotrader, a 50,000-square-foot project. White walls, light wood flooring and furnishings established our neutral canvas, and from there we layered pops of light blue in the chairs, screens, and accents to reflect the company’s branding.

Garden Moss Walls
Miracle Garden moss walls lent organic texture and a connection to the space, and the green hues complemented the blue accents. We also made sure to include an abundance of indoor plants to further cultivate biophilia.

Open Plan Seating
The mix of open seating, lounges, and meeting rooms continues to support collaboration, focus, and rejuvenation for the AutoTrader team throughout the day.

When you partner with Wagstaff, you can bring your Scandinavian-inspired office to life and create the ideal environment for productivity and well-being.

Experience the Scandinavian office lifestyle first hand by browsing our exceptional range of furniture and solutions. Our team masterfully blends form, function, and timeless Scandinavian design to create holistically uplifting workplaces for all.

- Colour Palette: A Scandinavian colour scheme that focuses on whites, greys, and shades of blue paired with blonde wood tones. Opt for painted wood for pops of colour.
- Textures: Natural fibres like wool, cotton, and linen add gentle softness to rugs, throws, and upholstery. Rough-hewn wood brings in organic variation. Use textural contrast to add interest.
- Plants & Greenery: Potted plants, moss walls, and living green screens connect interiors with nature. Position plants in gathering areas and near windows and try to choose low-maintenance varieties like succulents or snake plants.

- Natural Light: A hallmark of Scandinavian design is maximising natural light. Keep window treatments minimal and position desks near windows or skylights. Glass interior walls and doors also allow light to filter through more freely.
- Wood Accents: Use light-hued wood on floors, furniture, ceiling slats, or panelled walls, then weave in wood details like table legs, cabinetry, shelving, and counters for optimal Scandi appeal.
- Minimal Clutter: Limit decorative accessories to keep the serene Scandinavian vibe in your workplace. Stow away tools and supplies in storage units or behind closed cabinets, and reduce visual noise with clean lines, ample white space, and plenty of breathing room.
